The goldfish decide to leave their pond because the water is getting too warm and polluted. They sprout legs and travel to a far away place where nature remains untainted. Animals of every variety live here and welcome the goldfish to their community. The goldfish are happy again.
Feb 12, 2009 was the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, the inspiration for the walking fish that appear in many of my paintings.
It's been awhile since I did any works on paper, so this painting was a bit experimental. The folds and tears in the paper are intentional. The bottom section is a collage of drawings on Brooklyn Rail newspaper. You may notice the painting is structured as a bunch of horizontal strips on top of each other. It's based on Egyptian paintings, but there are no clear lines separating the sections, just the folds in the paper.
