I recently borrowed a book from the library about artist, Ynez Johnston. I had never seen her work before, but really liked her abstract paintings that sort of reminded me of Paul Klee. It inspired me to create this painting, which has little resemblance to her style, but I was more focused on detail, and not using large recognizable objects.
The title was inspired by a few things.
- The painting has a little bit of an American Indian theme.
- The painting is separated into lots of smaller sections, with something different going on in each one, yet they have commonality.
- There is a gallery on the Lower East Side called "A Gathering of the Tribes", and I always thought it was a really great name.
